About Harry Kewell

Harold "Harry" Kewell (born 22 September 1978) is an Australian professional football midfielder who plays for Melbourne Victory in the A-League. Internationally he has received 54 caps, and scored 16 goals, while playing for the Australian national team.

An exceptional dribbler on the wing, also capable of playing as an attacking midfielder and as a second striker, he is often regarded within the media as "Australia's finest football export", despite his career being blighted with injury.

Kewell scored a goal against Croatia which took Australia through to the knockout stages of the 2006 World Cup, the Australian national team's second World Cup. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Australian Professional Footballers’ Association.

Kewell also has a British passport through his father's heritage. Former Middlesbrough midfielder-turned pundit Robbie Mustoe named Kewell as one of the greatest players he had played against but questioned his consistency after his initial injuries. German international Michael Ballack has also highlighted Kewell's ability and inconsistency.

At the age of 16, Kewell left New South Wales Academy to join Leeds United in the English Premier League. He played his first game for Leeds in March of 1996. About a year and a half later, he scored his first goal for the squad in a 3-1 League Cup victory over Stoke City. 

A month later, in November 1997, he played for his homeland of Australia in a World Cup qualifier against Iran. People who watched that game saw Kewell score his first goal for Australia; however, the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Kewell’s second goal for his country came in a rematch with Iran, which also ended in a draw.

Kewell helped financially troubled Leeds to the semifinals of the Champions League during the 2000-01 season. He allegedly turned down an offer from Manchester United to join Liverpool for the start of the 2003-04 campaign. He sued for defamation of character, angered by claims that Liverpool paid off his manager. The case was settled out of court. 

On May 25, 2005, he played in Liverpool’s victory over AC Milan to win the Champions League. During that contest, he tore a groin muscle and spent months recovering from the injury and trying to persuade fans that he wasn’t dogging it. 

In November 2005, he helped Australia qualify for the 2006 World Cup -- the country’s first berth in the tournament since 1974.
